The Growing High-Risk Population

"Breast cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for women worldwide 1. There has been an increase in personalized breast cancer risk-stratification to identify women who may benefit from earlier and enhanced screening and risk-reduction efforts. While individuals with a pathogenic germline variant (i.e. BRCA1 or BRCA2) are at the highest risk of developing breast cancer 2, there are many women without germline variants who are also at elevated risk. High-risk women can also be identified by using validated risk calculators, such as the Gail and IBIS models, which account for personal and family history and the presence of high-risk breast lesions. Much of the work investigating the experiences of high-risk individuals centers on those with a pathogenic germline variant 3–6, but there is a growing recognition of the need to investigate the experience of others who are also at an elevated risk."
