Where Guidelines, Policy, and Practice Don’t Align

At The Full Scoop, our Policy and Systems continuum addresses the structural factors that shape access to genetic testing, risk assessment, screening, and preventive care. We work to ensure that women with elevated risk can access the care they need—whether that's genetic counseling to understand hereditary cancer risk, supplemental imaging for dense breasts, or enhanced surveillance based on family history, prior cancer, lifestyle factors, occupational exposures, or race/ethnicity.

Systemic barriers—coverage gaps, misaligned guidelines, and inconsistent provider guidance—create obstacles at every step, from determining who qualifies for genetic testing to accessing supplemental screening like MRI or ultrasound that can detect cancers mammograms may miss.

The Screening Disconnect

Major medical organizations disagree on screening recommendations—and these differences directly impact what insurance covers and what care providers recommend. Healthcare teams, community health workers, and patients are left navigating conflicting guidance, creating barriers to appropriate screening.

Policy Landscape on Screening

Across the United States, policies on breast cancer supplemental screening access vary widely, creating significant gaps in coverage and equity. While national guidelines set basic screening recommendations, it is state-level policies and insurance rules that often determine whether women have access to the full range of screening options, especially for those with dense breasts and other high-risk factors.
